Observational Drawing

Today, I’m excited to share a drawing study created using Procreate. The subjects include a glass jar, a little bird (originally part of a keychain), and kraft paper printed with a banana pattern.

I kept this exercise brief as my focus was on studying how light influenced the scene. And the light changes very fast.

I like to work in Procreate using many layers, including the ones for shadows and lights – and testing the possibilities of Multiply, Overlay and others blending modes between layers. Working through each part of the drawing step by step, using layers, helps my brain navigate complexities.

In this drawing, I find the final appearance of the paper particularly appealing. Below, you can glimpse this paper, initially used to wrap a blouse, featured in a photograph. It has found a place on my wall, and I appreciate its aesthetic.

The inspiration for this exercise.

Many times, I’ve undertaken this type of study using my watercolor notebooks, working with watercolors or gouache paints. Painting outdoors presents a different experience, requiring dealing through various elements beyond our control. I’ll showcase some of these works in a future post.
